Ancient Greek Drama & Comedy is on my "to-read" list and has been for at least a decade. I therefore appreciated this opportunity to read an adaptation of an Aristophanes work that updated the setting and put the dialogue in plain, colloquial American English. I knew the premise of the source material, "Lysistrata:" the women withhold sex from the men en masse in attempt to end a forever war. Given that, it was humorous to read the author's interpretation of how this scenario would play out in the late-20-teens United States. (To paraphrase the Mistress of Ceremonies puts it at the beginning of the play, "Have things changed all that much? . . .)
As an adaptation, I think "Liz Estrada" accomplishes what it sets out to do. The plot clips along at a quick pace and there is little filler. Characters are boiled down to stock personas, which makes many of the men look very foolish. Some of the dialogue is quite brazen and double entendres crop up every now and then. My chief complaint is with the cast of characters at the beginning: why go to great detail to describe how each of the women look and what they are wearing if it has little to no bearing on the plot??
