Interesting, but not really that enjoyable given the "there but for the grace of god" feel of the book. An extended discussion on the effects of childhood relationships and small town upbringing on adult lives. It's one I will probably keep thinking of for some time...

FINALLY got around to reading this. I bought it last year because I used to really like Sean Hughes on Never Mind the Buzzcocks (it's partly the accent but mainly the humour) but without knowing anything about his writing style or seeing any reviews. When I started reading I found it hard to get into and put it aside for a while.

So 'a while' turned into a year but eventually I picked it up again. Again it was slow to get going but then I started to like it. After the story picks up it takes some interesting turns and the disturbing revenge plot had a satisfying conclusion (so satisfying I was worried about myself). The humour is black - more so than I was expecting based on Hughes' TV appearances. The endless misery is a bit too much so I wouldn't recommend this to someone wanting a light-hearted read but personally I love dark comedy, and there are some truly killer moments.… (mehr)
