A classic Thames and Hudson book , published in 1950 and a celebration of the survival of English cathedrals from War damage . The fine photographs are beautifully clear handsome black and white reproductions . It was meant to be an august monumental publication to do justice to The great Romanesque and Gothic architecture . . The cathedrals covered are Canterbury, Durham , Ely , , Exeter, Gloucester , Hereford, Lichfield , Lincoln,, Norwich , Peterborough , Rochester, Salisbury , St Albans Wells Winchester, Worcester . of course Coventry was missing. in addition to the photographs, there are a number of ground plans . The tone and approach is reverential, descriptive , informative and historical . although there are other good books on English and European cathedrals , I think this book has stood the test of time ... Now over 60 years old and moving into the collectable category.… (mehr)
