Same thing with this short story collection, just read the Charles L. Grant story. It’s set in rural Ontario and it’s quite good. It reads like Gord Downie wrote horror story— bleak family drama, small town bar and a ghost by the river. Slow build but the end packs a punch.

Hutchinson's assessment of Canadian Law and religious liberty in Canada is a superb effort at bringing grounded legal realities and history to the fore in a time when Christians and advocates for religious liberty do indeed feel 'under siege.' Beyond historical foundations, the book looks at how the courts in Canadian have interpreted religious freedom and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as considering what engagement looks like for the church in our day. Hutchinson writes as one who has stood before the Supreme Court of Canada, and has represented the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada in past legal initiatives. For Canadian pastors and others concerned about the anti-religious bigotry which so often seems to go entirely unchecked in our society, this work is informative and both encouraging and challenging.… (mehr)

I'm rereading this gem of a book for some research. It covers a wide swathe of pulp history and the details on the major (and some minor) pulp figures from the 1920's through the 1940's. It's a refresher course of why I love these characters and the near-genre.

This is a collection of short stories that appeared in pulp magazines in the 1929's and 1930's. All stories in this volume have members of the Northwest Mounted police, the original name of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as their heroes. Except for the last story by Frederick Nebel, these narratives are too fantastic to be even close to reality. Some of the authors gave their heroes what seemed to be supernatural powers to overcome their adversaries. Lester Dent`s hero, the Silver Corporal, could bury himself in a snow drift, have the villains fill the the drift full of led and emerge further down the drift uninjured and undetected, Some of these Mounted officers seemed impervious to sub temperatures as illustrated by their ability to take their mitts off at 50 degrees below and fire guns and make meals plus surviving dips in frozen lakes without the aid of a companion to prevent them from freezing solid. I remember reading my Dad`s Argosy and other pulps, but I remember stronger story lines. Maybe time has fogged my memory and these poorly written examples were the norm but I prefer to believe not.… (mehr)
