I’ve always wanted to be a writer (like most writers, I’m sure) but not until the last few years have I taken it seriously. I was always told growing up that I had to get a job and “earn my keep,” so I pushed my dream of writing a book to the back of my mind and entered the workforce. Fast-forward many, many years and here I am, trying to make a go at it.

I stumbled across Blogger in 2010 and my world of writing exploded. I have met (via the web) so many amazing writers and industry professionals and book bloggers that have passed on their wisdom and experience and successes and failures. So many, in fact, that I have no excuse to sit down and write out the stories living in my head. Which is what I’m now attempting to do.

I enjoy reading more than most other things (well, except maybe for writing. And TV. No way am I giving up my TV) . OUT OF THE ASHES is my first foray into the world of adult m/m and I am loving it!

I could not finish reading this book. Under 30% in, and the repetition and the terrible dialogue and the lack of plot development have all become too much to endure. It desperately needs an intense edit.

This story begins with Alex discovering that his bookstore has been destroyed by a fire. I really felt for Alex as he was dealing with the loss of his dream. He was fighting where he came from… a wealthy family and had put his best effort into creating an independent life for himself. In one evening… that life is gone.

Still recovering from the loss of his fiance who cheated on him, Alex suddenly finds himself as the main suspect in the fire that destroyed his bookstore. The good thing is that this brings Matt into Alex’s life. This was the part at which things got a little rocky for me. The moment that Alex and Matt saw each other they were both completely obsessed with one another. It only took a couple of days for them to get together and, it seemed, about a week for them to be declaring their feelings. If insta-love is your thing, then this will probably work really well for you!

I found there wasn’t much distinction between the voice of Alex and the voice of Matt… I had a little trouble sometimes remembering which character was which. Most of the character’s thoughts seem to be focussed on sex rather than any of the other qualities each of the men share. it didn’t read as very authentic to me.

There is a LOT of sex in this story. There’s much more sex than there is plot. Depending on what you’re looking for that could be a selling point! Just don’t go into this thinking that it is plot-heavy. There’s an underlying suspense plot… who is trying to hurt Alex? What happened in his past? But, most of the reveals are spread out in between the sex scenes. I would definitely give this author another try later on as this is their first novel.

This is a fast read and I’m sure there’s an audience for this type of book! 2 stars from me.

When this novel begins, Ian Fisher is on a long slow decline to his rock bottom. He’s using drugs and drinking to try and wipe his memory clear and all it does is get him in a whole lot of trouble. When he is arrested for Drug trafficking, he calls his sister Rachel.

This is the point at which it becomes clear that Ian is dealing with a hell of a lot. Losing his parents sent Ian spiraling because he didn’t know how to deal with it. That meant, ultimately, that he also left his sister…and the man he loved, Sam. The problem is that he still loves Sam.

Ian’s public defender gets his sentence reduced to probation and he is to live with his sister for three months. That might not be a problem except for the fact that Sam lives within walking distance, Sam and his new fiancé.

There’s a lot going on in this book and a lot of it isn’t pretty. But substance abuse isn’t pretty. The author has done a great job of capturing Ian’s spiral out of control. I have to say that there were times when I really wanted to shake Ian. He keeps repeating the same mistakes, and then somehow managing to come up with new ones. I could watch him sliding further and further down even though it seemed on the surface that he might be trying to turn things around.

I found myself frustrated at times by Ian’s sister. Once Ian was in her house, she continued to have alcohol around and watch as he drank. Enabling is always a difficult thing to see and it turns out it’s a difficult thing to read. Now, don’t get me wrong. The fact that the characters annoyed me doesn’t mean this is a bad book – quite the contrary! I was annoyed because they were written so well.

What is demonstrated really well in this book is how difficult it is to put yourself first. You really can’t be in someone’s life unless you are willing to help yourself first. You have to be healthy and whole in order to enter into a loving relationship with someone. For many addicts, working on themselves, putting themselves first is a difficult step to take and Ian is no different.

It’s not until Ian is the victim of a terrible and horrifying hate crime that he is forced into a corner and has to begin to explore why things have gone so badly for him. Please read the warnings on this one! I can imagine that the content will be triggering for some people.

The author seems to have found his voice in this second novel. This book is well written and that's tough with such an immensely challenging subject.
