2132 Elihu Root Volume II 1905-1937, by Philip C. Jessup (read 4 Mar 1988) This is a 1938 biography in two volumes (yes, I read both volumes, finishing the first one on 25 Feb 1988) of Root, who was born 15 Feb 1845 and died 7 Feb 1937. It was written by a friend and is very friendly to its subject. It is not written in strict chronology, and was boring at times. Root became Secretary of War in 1899 and Secretary of State in 1905. He presided at the 1912 GOP convention, despite his great friendship for TR. He was a kind of patrician in western New York--James W. Wadsworth, Jr., succeeded him as U.S. Senator from New York.… (mehr)
