The Boy Biggles von W. E. Johns

Some enjoyable tales about Biggles early life. The chronology doesn't quite fit but thats a minor issue, a bigger issue is how often he has to kill dangerous animals. Good old fashioned boys own adventure.

The camels are coming von W. E. Johns

A series of stories of Biggles' flights of daring in WWI -- each chapter standing alone in plot, but forming an emotional arc (early on he mentions never touching whiskey; later on as his CO and friends worry about him they remark on his drinking rather a lot of the stuff) until the final ironic end. Absolutely jam-packed with jargon, it's like learning a new language.

Biggles a poklad Madagaskaru von William Earl Johns

Kniha ničím nepřekvapí ani nenadchne. Samozřejmě, čte se to dobře, sem tam potěší zajímavý nápad (třeba s kouskem utrženého jídelního lístku) ale celkově je to kniha dokonale zaměnitelná s jinými poválečnými povídkovými bigglesovkami. I tady je děj povídek líčen střízlivým a většinou i poměrně uvěřitelným způsobem, ovšem takřka bez napětí a s pointami málo překvapivými... Zajímavé jsou leda tak dobové okolnosti stojící za inspirací k sepsání povídek, například fakt že víc než polovina v knize řešených případů se týká pašování neprocleného zboží. Dalším frekventovaným dobově velmi příznačným tématem jsou povstání v koloniích, za nimiž vždy stojí nějaký gauner (jinými slovy, koloniální správa je skvělá věc, jen nám ji kazí nekalé živly). Zajímavé jsou ostatně i okolnosti, stojící za povídkou "Noční let". Letadlo "Planet" reálně neexistovalo, existovalo ovšem v té době supermoderní britské dopravní proudové letadlo "de Havilland Comet", které tehdy kromě velkých očekávání trápila i série nebezpečných, z části dokonce smrtelných nehod...
