Irène Joliot-Curie (1897–1956)

Irène Joliot-Curie was the older daughter of Marie Curie and Pierre Curie, winners of the Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry. She became a scientist specializing in radiochemical research. Together with her husband, Frédéric Joliot-Curie (they hypenated their names when they married in 1926), Irène Joliot-Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radioactivity. Their daughter Hélène Langevin-Joliot grew up to become a nuclear physicist and their son Pierre Joliot became a noted biologist.
