Esther Jungreis was born Esther Naomi Jungreisz in Szeged, Hungary on April 27, 1936. In June 1944, she and her family were deported to Bergen-Belsen, where they were inmates for six months. After the war, her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. She received a mehr anzeigen yeshiva education at the Bais Yaakov School for Girls and then studied in Israel with the biblical scholar Nechama Leibowitz. On returning to the United States, she married a distant cousin Theodore Jungreis in 1955. After moving to Long Island, the couple founded both the North Woodmere Jewish Center and Congregation Ohr Torah in 1963. She wrote an advice column entitled Rebbetzin's Viewpoint for The Jewish Press for 45 years. She founded an outreach organization called Hineni, which offered classes in the Torah and social mixers at which Jewish singles could find one another. Beginning in 1982, she broadcast a weekly half-hour Torah program Hineni on National Jewish Television. Her first book, The Jewish Soul on Fire, was published in 1982. She wrote several self-help books including The Committed Life: Principles for Good Living from Our Timeless Past, The Committed Marriage: A Guide to Finding a Soul Mate and Building a Relationship Through Timeless Biblical Wisdom, and Life Is a Test: How to Meet Life's Challenges Successfully.
