Joanna Kafarowski

This was an interesting biography of the first woman to live in Antarctica, in the late 1940s. She was married to explorer Finn Ronne and spent most of her life promoting him and downplaying her own accomplishments. Even though she (and another woman, Jenny Darlington) were not originally planned to join the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), Finn asked them to come along at the last minute. Both women contributed to the success of the mission and then were pretty much forgotten. Their husbands had a dispute with each other during the year, causing a rift between the formerly friendly women, unfortunately. After Finn died, Jackie was able to take a more active position as a leader among women scientists and explorers.… (mehr)
