The Horror of Haglin House by M. R. C. Kasasian is a Victorian mystery thriller. But the writing has some major flaws. With every chapter, new characters enter, and everything goes haywire. I couldn't understand anything, even after trying so hard. The language was so weird and different. I feel I am a bit harsh on the author, but I couldn't help it. The only best thing about the book is its cover and title. I had high hopes for the book. The book only deserves two stars.

A bit too cute for me. I kind of liked the idea of the protagonist's book characters interjecting their opinions, but it came out as a bit twee. The actual plot was okay up until the twist, which made it feel overly long -- what seemed like the finish line turned out to be the beginning of a whole new segment. The characters also felt a bit too cute to be three-dimensional.

Interesting enough, very long-12 hrs.? Narrator did OK (some voices very high pitched & grating). References to the Holy Bible-all negative. Main character “believes in God, then not, refers to wrong verses for context”. Plays Bible-verse roulette. Cannot recommend for Christians. Others may like it. 2-1/2 ⭐️⭐️🔆 for storyline.

DNF at 55%

For a murder mystery, the key detective character - not the main character - is so deliberately obtuse as to be unbelievable. The main character, with no detective experience or demonstrable detective skills is “out-investigating” the key detective. All this, while the main police contact allows both characters to run around looking at crime scenes and doing their own thing.

While Victorian era investigative techniques may have been different than modern day, the leaps required to accept this book’s flaws are too big to be comfortable.… (mehr)
