I enjoyed this book, especially the unique setting of a bike race in France. The characters were believable and well developed. I'd definitely read another in this series.

A Vintage End is a mystery set during a series of vintage bicycle races in France in which a number of bizarre incidents become increasingly more deadly. The story reminded me of the Dick Francis horse racing mystery novels only instead of horses D’Arcy Kavanagh has bicycle racing. I wasn’t familiar with the author before reading this novel and liked it so much I’m going to read the first novel in this series The Bastard is Dead.

Good story. I especially liked the settings in France and the idea of vintage bike races. It felt a little long and could have been tightened up in places. For instance, the parts where Paul's editor was telling him to go get the story seemed repetitive and could have been shortened to a sentence. But I would try another book in the series because the characters were likeable and plot was interesting.

I am an avid cyclist who found the descriptions and locations of the vintage bike races fascinating to read about. D'Arcy Kavanagh also incorporated the historical accounts of the massacre at Oradour-sue-Glane into the plot line. I could vividly imagine the gruff french detectives that the main character, Paul Burke, had to interact with while solving the case. My mouth watered while reading about all the food and restaurants that Burke ate at. This combination with an intriguing plot made this book was a wonderful read on so many levels.… (mehr)
