This book was packed with fun things to use for school or homeschool kiddos in this age range. I would suggest this.

Hands-On Ecology is a great book for real science study for your 2-3 graders. The projects are real... so be ready to have a fish tank and supplies for keeping small animals as you build habitats together. I love that Hands-On Ecology treats young people like real scientists (because they are!) There is even a sign you can copy and hang that lets others know you are studying an area and asks that your equipment be left alone. There is also a section about getting involved in helping conservation. Hosting a speaker, penny drive, and more. This is the second edition of a 2006 book. I was disappointed to read that the author is not a scientist, although she is an educator. Collaborating with an ecologist would provide expertise in the field and perhaps provide a stronger scientific angle for the book. The book begins with a discussion on what ecology is and why it is important. It closes with resources such as websites, magazines, and books on ecology and lists the Next Generation Science Standards alignment for grades K-3. Sandwiched between these items are 38 activities that explore the world of ecology. Each activity includes objectives, materials, vocabulary, and procedures. Some activities also include a reproducible forms or sheets as appropriate. The 38 activities are divided into seven different chapters by area of study. This would be a great resource for any elementary teacher to help incorporate hands-on learning.… (mehr)

Some of the activities might be a little advanced for grades 2-3 but there are enough contained in it that the lessons can be progressively taught, thus preparing the students for greater learning. Activities are varied in that some are indoors, in the classroom, and others are outdoors, so more opportunities to engage the students. A bit more artistic interpretations or responses might be useful for those young students still new to the language skills. Future editions might incorporate using native plants and shrubs to attract native pollinators.… (mehr)
