An excellent microhistorical treatment, using a curious incident among the Randolph family as a focal point to tackle the knotty personal stories of the Randolph clan, the power of rumor and gossip in the early national period, and the long-lasting effects of scandal on those involved and those close to them. Well-researched and clearly written.

It was interesting to learn that she was such an emotional individual and prone to depression and melancholy. I appreciated how the author included not only facts and timelines, she also provided insight to what was occurring at that time in history that helped develop my own opinion on how Martha Randolph dealt with her views on home and family. Definitely a book I would recommend to those that enjoy people in history.… (mehr)
