Chuck Kinder was born Charles Alfonso Kinder II in Montgomery, West Virginia on October 8, 1942. He received a bachelor's degree in 1967 and a master's degree in 1968 from West Virginia University. His master's thesis became his first novel, Snakehunter, which was published in 1973. It got him a mehr anzeigen creative writing fellowship at Stanford University. Kinder joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. He retired in 2014. His other books included The Silver Ghost, Honeymooners: A Cautionary Tale, and Last Mountain Dancer: Hard-Earned Lessons in Love, Loss, and Honky-Tonk Outlaw Life. He also wrote two collections of poetry entitled All That Yellow and Imagination Motel. He was the inspiration for a character in Michael Chabon's novel Wonder Boys.
