Suann Kiser

SuAnn Kiser’s “Hazel Saves The Day” is a short children’s chapter book about a chicken who’s new in the neighbourhood. Hazel is a humble but superstitious chicken who has moved into a new house and doesn’t know anybody in the area. In addition to not knowing anyone, Friday the thirteenth is tomorrow and she is afraid she will have bad luck. She figures that if she is to have bad luck tomorrow she might as well surround herself with friends. She goes out to meet new friends and runs into a rabbit, a weasel and a swan dancing in the woods. Each one tries to teach her how to dance their dance but she is unsuccessful at all of the dances. She end up in the lake and says that she can’t dance but when the shakes herself dry the rabbit points out that she is a great dancer.

When she gets to town she inadvertently stops a rat from robbing a clothing store and the owner of the store rewards her with free rain gear. She invites all her new friends to a Friday the thirteenth party and learns that she really doesn’t have to worry about bad luck because she is as lucky as chickens can get. Kiser tells a fun story for young readers and creates a sweet and humble character in Hazel.… (mehr)
