It's at least as good as the first movie, although I don't see how that gives it a reason to exist. The opening flashback sequence demonstrates that there's a lot of great stuff that can be done in this universe, but these characters' story was over at the end of part 1.

It's very effective at being tense and scary. It's not so great at the sci-fi/fantasy/adventure stuff that I usually like about the monster movies that I like. There's a lot of cringing.

Showed it to my husband, who loved it. Scared my dachshund, who usually ignores my horror movies completely. Husband remarked that he felt like he needed to remain quiet, despite all logic.
