Fabio the dog is uninterested in any of the traditional canine pursuits in this sweet picture-book from Spain. Then one night Max, the boy of the family, notices that Fabio has gone missing. Originally published in Spain by the Madrid-based NubeOcho Books, as Ni guau ni miau, this engaging picture-book can be interpreted in a variety of interesting ways. It works as an exploration of the idea of allowing people (or dogs, as the case may be) to be themselves, rather than trying to pigeonhole them into particular roles, whether based upon gender or species. In this sense, it works as an oblique exploration of the idea of being transgender, although it could also address individuals who just don't conform to social expectations regarding gender. It is part of the publisher's Egalité series, meant to promote equality across a diverse range of identity spectra. The artwork is bright and colorful, with a fun, cartoon-like style.
