The subtitle is misleading. It says "Past, Present and Future". While that may have been true when the book was published, back in 1981, in 2005 it's all history. Okay, lame joke. The book itself is rather useful however. As homeschoolers, we wanted a good book on state history. When we called Homeschool Potpourri, they said that this was the book of choice. Surprisingly enough, it was the same textbook my wife had back in school. The Pacific Northwest covers the history, geography and social aspects of the old Oregon Territory and the three states that were carved out of the bulk of it: Oregon, Washington and Idaho. While it as boring as your typical textbook, it has all the basic information you need to get an idea of the area's history and what things were like there back in the 1970s. ("computers" has only two entries in the index. "Microsoft" is nowhere to be seen.) Of course, you'd then want to send the kids to the library to get some well written, in-depth information. But The Pacific Northwest is worth checking out as a good place to start.
