While there were a few moments that had me unable to put it down, the bulk of this felt like a lot of exposition that unfortunately hid important contextual clues needed to enjoy the story. Ultimately it was a bit of a snooze fest and took me far too long to read.

The pacing was off for me. This is likely due to the aforementioned exposition. Also, there were certain plot details that really shouldn't have been included, or should've been more in focus.

I also had a very hard time buying that the great Casanova was even rough acquaintances with Mozart. Never mind that the poet who is the star was constantly being upstaged by these name dropped friends of his.… (mehr)

I feel like I should follow-up this book with a visit to the opera to see Mozart's Marriage of Figaro performed! This novel, set in 18th-century Vienna during the creation of Mozart's operas, is told from the point of view of Lorenzo Da Ponte, who in real life worked with Mozart on his operas, and in the novel gains the side-job of murder investigator. This is a fun read for anyone with an interest in the period and a nice mystery filled with interesting characters.

Murder and musical genius!

A fascinating walk through 1786 Vienna during the time of Emperor Joseph II. Lorenzo Da Ponte the court librettist is working with Mozart on The Marriage of Figaro. At the same time he is fighting off the taunts and political machinations of his court rivals. When Da Ponte's barber is taken to debtor's prison Ponte agrees to help him. Suddenly Da Ponte's path is strewn with murder, secret police and possible traitors before he can come to some illuminating conclusions. A clever mystery that rings true with the jostling politics of artistic rivals and the more sinister actions of other interested parties. Lebow brilliantly imbues the times and personalities with startling and believable realism.
