The story is filled with intrigue, deception and sadness all said in a romantic tone. The plot has a strong emphasis on Sarah’s romance and her tumultuous relationship with Tony. The pacing is steady and moves back and forth between the mission and Sarah’s romantic indecisions. As for Adeline her credibility is questionable for most part. MI5 never knew if she would turn on them and destroy all they were hoping to achieve. But her action made for good intrigue and suspense from her first appearance till we reach the conclusion. Sarah took back stage and was not the strong character I would have hoped to see. Her part a bit too subdued for my taste. Tony needed a boot to open up with his feelings but Sarah manages to give it to him by the end...haha.

I love the plot it is gripping and thrilling. It kept me on edge since it was hard to see what the outcome would be. Will the mission fall apart and thousands would die or will it succeed. In a few words: not a bad book if you are a spy lover in a ww11 setting.

Sarah Gillespie, an Irish woman working as an MI5 agent in London during World War II, is tasked with being the handler for a volunteer double agent, Adeline, who is from Paris. Adeline is impulsive, stubborn, and unpredictable. Sarah is never really sure if she can be trusted….either with the espionage task or with Sarah’s boyfriend, Tony. Adeline’s only demand is that MI5 rescue her Russian boyfriend who is hiding in Paris. If they do not do that, she threatens to betray them to the Nazis.

I started this book not realizing it was the third in a series. That was a real disadvantage as there were references to people and past experiences that lacked background details. It worked OK as a standalone, but I really missed knowing more about Sarah and her friends’ histories.

This was very different form most of the historical fiction I usually read as there was more emphasis on Sarah’s romance than on the espionage. I found her continual ruminations about Tony and their relationship a bit tedious. In the chapters that focused on the spy story, my interest picked up.

IRA tentacles!

Imagine finding out that your father’s an IRA lead officer working with the Germans. A father who’s deserted you and your sister for the greater cause. Who had you believe he was dead! Who did you bury in his stead? Now your sister’s dead and you want Revenge.
Sarah Gillespie is working with MI5 and when the chance to capture her father comes up, she takes it. That necessitates having an American, Lieutenant Tony Anderson, as her partner. An American, she doesn’t trust. He calls her Irish all the time and generally acts like a cad. They are off to Wales to locate her father and find out what the IRA is up to there. Of course things go somewhat pear shaped what with neither Sarah or Anderson communicating with each other.
Somehow Sarah’s presence comes to her fathers notice. And this is just the beginning of a torturous time for all concerned. There are moles in the Wales office, and in Whitehall.
The chemistry between Sarah and Anderson improves, but the early part of the novel is rather dotted with stiff dialogue between Sarah and her friends. With Anderson I could understand .
Despite this, the tension builds, and Sarah finds herself dashing through London streets trying to save a close ally of the British.

Sarah Gillespie is back working for MI5 to help them catch her father, a member of the IRA who faked his own death. Along with her father, she is charged with working with a partner, an American ally, to help discover how the IRA is working with the Nazis. As Sarah wonders if she can trust her new partner, she helps discover the fact that double agents are working with the Nazis and are looking to assassinate one of the most influential assets of the war.

Having read the first book in this series, I was so happy when I received access to this ARC. Learning what happened with Sarah and her sorry excuse for a father was well worth the wait. I enjoyed watching Sarah's interactions with her MI5 leaders as well as her American partner. This was a truly enjoyable story.

I enjoy Pam Lecky's writing and her ability to weave together a story full of drama and storylines that keep the reader interested and entertained. Her interesting perspective on the war as someone living in Europe. I will gladly read any story Lecky publishes.… (mehr)
