In 1949 90% of the Chinese population lived in the countryside. At present, 60% of the population reside in urban centers. For centuries relations between people were organized by familial lineage, locale, and dialect. This book examines the lack of civic glue, or a moral center, in cities largely comprised of 'outsiders'.
