- Denise Legrix was born in Cahagnes, a village in the Calvados department of Normandy, France. She was born with a malformation of her upper arms and hands, a condition known as dysmelia.
Surrounded by a loving family, and possessed of a strong will, Denise developed techniques in her youth to help overcome her disability and gain independence. She became a painter and set an example to others by showing them her techniques, including painting by mouth, and by writing books.
Her autobiography Née comme ça (Born This Way) brought her international recognition.
