Rezensionen

The Chinese have, over the years, rationalized their clinical experience of acupuncture into a detailed system which effectively links traditional philosophical concepts with today's rapidly expanding fund of scientific knowledge, and the authors of this book where privileged to attend an acupuncturre course at the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Nanking in China during which they were given a clear picture of the way acupuncture is being practised in Chinese hospitals today.

Drawing upon the information gained from their trip the authors here put forward an up-to-date view of Chinese acupuncture techniques. They include notes on tongue and pulse diagnosis; ear, scalp and hand acupuncture; moxibustion and cupping, and acupuncture anaesthesia. Also, included are suggested treatments for a number of common ailments, along with the reasoning behind such treatments.

This modern adaptation or classical Chinese medicine has lost nothiing in terms of therapeutic benefit to the patient, and has gained a great deal in making the concepts more universally understandable. As such it is an important new resource for acupuncturists and members of the lay pubic who are interested in acupuncture.

George Lewith gained a degree in Biochemistry at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1971, and went on to complete his medical studies at Westminister Hospital, London. After this he worked in London teaching hospitals until 1977 when he gained the MRCP. It was then that he went with his wife to China to study acupuncture at Nanking. On returning to England he worked for a short while as a GP in Hampshire gaining his MRCGP, and then took up a post at the University of Southampton lecturing in primary medical care. He is now at the Centre for the study of Alternative Medicine at Southampton where, with a colleague, he runs a number of teaching courses for doctors on various techniques with alternative medicine. He is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal college of General Practitioners and the British Medical Acupuncture Society.

Nicola Lewith qualified at St. Thoma's Hospital in 1971 and has wide variety of experience of physio-therapy in several London teaching hospitals, finally becoming senior physiotherapist a the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond street. After her visit to China with her husband she worked in an experimental unit at Christchurch Hospital, Dorset. Both she ahd her husband were awarded Diplomas of Acupuncture at the end of the three month course at Nankin. She is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and is a State registered Physiotherapist.
