Lindgren was born on November 14, 1907, in Sweden. Her work has been acclaimed with many prestigious awards, among them the Hans Christian Andersen Medal (1958), the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award (1978), and the International Book Award (1993). This truly internationally known author was the recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Medal and has been honored repeatedly in her native Sweden. There is a bronze statue of her in a Stockholm park. Her picture is on a postage stamp. The "World of Astrid Lindgren" is a theme park featuring the wholesome characters of her books. The annual children's literature award is known as the Astrid Lindgren Prize. The inspiration for this long and illustrious career, spanning five decades, is the author's own childhood. Her memories - of free and often wild play with her brothers and sister, of loving parents, of a close-knit farm community, of reading about heroines like Pollyanna and Anne of Green Gables - became the foundations of her books. Lindgren has said, "I write to amuse the child within me, and I can only hope that in this way other children as well can have a little fun." Lindgren amused her own children by telling them stories. Her daughter, Karin, named Pippi Longstocking, and the first written story was given to Karin as a birthday gift. The next year, 1945, Pippi Longstocking won a best children's book competition and Lindgren began writing the perennially child-pleasing stories that make up her enormous body of work, some of which are the series based on "Children of Noisy Village", the fable "The Tomten", the rambunctious "Karlson-On-the-Roof", the irrepressible"Lotta on Troublemaker Street" , the controversial "The Brothers Lionheart", and the unforgettable, wildly funny superheroine, Pippi, was featured in other books and became a star of stage, screen and television. Lindgren has been called the world's most read author of children's books. She is hailed as the third most translated children's book author after H.C. Andersen and the Grimm brothers. Her impact on the world of children's literature is immeasurable. Astrid Lindgren died in her sleep, in her home in Sweden on January 28, 2002 at the age of 94.

Young Readers Society: Our 8-12 Book Club Welcome to Secret Garden's newly formed first ever book club for readers 8-12! It's a regular EVERY-THIRD-WEDNESDAY thing, from now on, through the summer and into the school year. We will sometimes do some book-related crafts and we will always serve piping hot FREE pizza from our friends over at Ballard Pizza Company. Thank you, Ballard Pizza Company! (Parents, you really should go over and try the great pies at Ballard Pizza Company!)
Our intention is to choose books that will interest both boys and girls, especially in this age bracket. I suspect that as the Society grows, we’ll read a variety of books based on the particular interests of the different kids who show up on a regular basis.
The goal of our this club's fearless leader (the amazing Becky M.) is to introduce titles that will pleasantly surprise society members, like all book clubs, titles may not be ones members would choose to read on their own. She’ll definitely be open to book suggestions from the kids, but she will try to have three options for them to choose from every month to keep things simple. The Young Readers’ Society is about giving kids a safe place to talk about books and reading and to express their opinions openly. Parents will be encouraged to browse the shop, or grab a bite to eat in Ballard, but as far as the Society goes – no grown-ups allowed! For those kids who were not able to make our August meeting, but who have read our June pick, The Emerald Atlas, I want to let you know about a contest we’re having through this next month. If anyone is interested in writing a recommendation (what we booksellers call "shelf-talkers") for The Emerald Atlas, my coworkers and I will be picking our favorite, and I’ll announce the winner at the next YRS meeting. The prize for the winner is the advanced reader copy of the sequel, The Fire Chronicle, which will be coming out in hardcover on October 9th. Feel free to drop any entries off at the shop during the month – a simple paragraph about why you like the book is all that’s necessary.
September's meeting is going to be a little different. Alison Church from the Nordic Heritage Museum will be coming to talk to us and possibly do some crafts. Our book selection is Nordic themed so kids can choose one of the following three books: Pippi Longstocking, By Astrid Lindgren How to Train Your Dragon, by Cressida Cowell (the first in the series) and Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer. We’ll be discussing the differences between the books and talking about what makes them Nordic. Just a quick warning as well, Sea of Trolls is recommended for readers ages 10 and up. This is because of the size of the book, not because of the content, but if you have a younger kid who is interested in reading it, please be aware that it is a bit more advanced. These kids are all such good readers that I’m sure it’ll be a breeze for most of them, but if you have concerns please feel free to pick one of the other books instead.
Don’t hesitate to call Becky M. anytime with questions/comments. Or, you can write her directly by clicking the contect us text above left.
