This book tells the story of a wild pony, half mustang and part Arabian, who is tamed and loved by a young boy on a ranch in Wyoming. It isn't exactly a children's book, but reads more like a general read of the early 1900's, and is as enjoyable as the Lad stories that it resembles.

After 40 years, I thought of this book, found, & re-read it. Glad I did. I still remembered a bit of it with amazing clarity. I'm sorry that I never got to read the first of these books [b:Wolf King|3123156|Wolf King|Joseph Wharton Lippincott|http://www.goodreads.com/assets/nocover/60x80.png|3154499]. Unfortunately, that's selling for $150 or more used!

[b:Wolf King|3123156|Wolf King|Joseph Wharton Lippincott|http://www.goodreads.com/assets/nocover/60x80.png|3154499] was about a wolf in the wilds of Alberta, Canada. This one takes place mostly in the same area. I don't know a firm date, but there are cars, but not a lot. I'd say it's set about 1930's. Although first published in 1944, there is no mention of WWII.

This is the story of Reddy, a hound, & follows him from puppyhood through his prime through all sorts of trials & some gorgeous, tough country. Lippincott does a great job of following the action both from the human & animal POV. He gets a bit repetitive with some elements, but it's a great YA novel & not at all bad for an adult.

Thanks to assistance here at LT, I was able to identify this beloved book from my childhood. I found a copy and it arrived yesterday. Of course, I had to read it immediately!

The author takes true stories about coyotes and blends them into a narrative about the life and adventures of a female coyote pup, rescued in the West, transported to Pennsylvania, where she lived in the parks and woods outside of Philadelphia for several years.

Most of the book is factual and believable, although as an adult there are a couple situations that make me go "hmm" and wonder if the author stretched the facts just a bit.

Overall, a good read for any child, whether 9, 19 or 69...

Brilliant book, great descriptive language and some of the best writing I've ever seen, the story is amazing and amazingly interesting. It can take you breath away at times, make you want to never let it go and you are guaranteeing to bite your nail the whole way through! I greatly enjoyed it and give a warm hand to Mr.Lippincott! ~Teris.G.
