False Pretenses features an easy and uncomplicated plot. The characters are fleshed out in detail and this allow the reader to connect with them. An interracial couple, both lead characters are three-dimensional and likeable. The premise is a bit of a stretch, but is orchestrated with enough development that it's very believable within the context of the story. The author uses everyday diction, which makes the story entertaining and relatable. The plot really gets interesting when Alyssa and Nathan get to the Cayman Islands and many interesting and unexpected events occur. There is a hint of prejudice toward Alyssa by Nathan's family, but he's fine with her ethnicity as it is part of what makes her the beautiful person she is.

A great read that delivers a good story balanced by moments of suspense, humor and enough passion to make it a truly enjoyable contemporary romance. Alyssa Jackson is certain her bookstore will turn a profit if she can stay in business long enough. With no other choice, she asks her cousin Trinity for a loan. It turns out Trinity also has a problem and Alyssa is the perfect solution. Trinity's boss, Nathan Corde, wants her to pretend to be his "fiancé" during a family vacation with his parents. Trinity is in a relationship, but Alyssa has no problem taking the role in exchange for the loan.
