I'm not sure why I keep reading anything related to the late, great Prisoner television show.

I remember finding the show when it came on reruns in Canada, probably around 1975. I remember it blowing my 12-year-old mind. And then when my Scottish stepfather told me it was a sort-of follow up to McGoohan's Drake character in his previous series, Danger Man (which I haven't seen even a second of), it blew my mind yet again.

Not even sure anymore if I managed to get through all 17 episodes and, even if I did, I can tell you my pre-teen brain didn't soak up a tenth of what was being thrown at it.

And yet, I'm endlessly fascinated (and always ultimately disappointed with) any follow-ups. I remember Dean Motter's [b:The Prisoner: Shattered Visage|160799|The Prisoner Shattered Visage|Dean Motter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388293258l/160799._SY75_.jpg|155200] leaving me a bit cold.

Which brings us to this, a rather simple story involving the macguffin of Pandora, and whether Breen will break and give up its secrets. That's most of it right there. The story does a lot of homage to the original series, and tries to push the boundaries a touch, so I guess it should be complimented on that, but overall, I finished it and just thought, "okay, well...what am I gonna read next?"

I’m not really sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, it’s got those creepy fairies and urban fantasy grit that I love, and it deals with the real-world consequences of believing in fairies and working magic in the modern world, and the art is fantastic. The dialogue’s good and the interaction between characters feels very realistic, and perfectly Irish.

On the other hand, the characters felt like they existed to serve the story Lorimer wanted to tell, rather than the other way round, and there were points in the story that left me a little confused, a little lost, like there were scenes that had been taken out so the story would fit comic format better. And I felt the ending came a bit out of nowhere and it left me feeling unresolved and a bit disappointed. (Lorimer spends time building up a few supporting characters and then … doesn’t do a whole lot with them.)

I might have liked the story better if it had been a novel rather than a comic, which would have given Lorimer time to really flesh everything out and build the atmosphere more. It’s Gaimanesque as it stands but it could have been a lot more so. I don’t regret reading it, but I wasn’t very impressed with it overall either.

Warnings: Child abduction, accusations of mental illness, forced use of psychological medication, gore.

6/10

I actually really enjoyed this graphic novel. This TPB contains all the issues of The Hunt in one volume.

This graphic novel is set in modern day but deals with evil fae that suck the souls from sick humans. It’s a very dark and somewhat gory story. However I really enjoyed the fae mythology in here and enjoyed the horror themed spin on it all.

The illustration is amazing, I especially loved the scenes in the fairy realm. The colors are rich and beautiful and the graphic novel is easy to follow.

Things are left kind of open ended but the main storyline is tied up. It would be great to see future graphic novels set in this world.

Overall I really liked this. This was a well done blend of horror and fae mythology. I would recommend to those who enjoy fantasy horror graphic novels.

Even though Frank was able to prevent the 'Millennium event' at the turn of the millennium, evil has not been stopped.

I didn't like it. It wasn't working for me. The story was all over the place and very confusing. The artwork didn't appeal to me. I didn't enjoy reading it and was glad it was over. Perhaps it does work for someone else, but it was not for me.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
