I had wanted to read this for ages since it was mentioned in several childrens books I liked and I finally managed to stumble into a copy. I had been warned it was awful but I don't think I was prepared for how terrible. It trades in most of the worst Irish stereotypes with reckless abandon then adds on layer and layer of terrible cruelty and a final dollop of self-serving piety. I don't know why it would ever be promoted by any author. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.
