This excellent flipper-througher has been my breakfast-table book for a whilenow, but today it made the leap up to dinner-table book (okay, it's the same table), and that is worthy of memorialization on LibraryThing. Maps in 10-year increments, lots of gaps, clear demarcations of ethnic neighbourhoods (postwar Jewish quarter! prewar Japantown!) and neighbourhood-neighbourhoods (now I know where Marpole is!) and where they saw bears in the 1890s and all kinds of prominent folk with their little stories (every prominent corporate asshole, from Pattinson to Campbell, always starts out in real estate or used cars or such. I'm glad I'll never go down that road!) and just a million sweet facts and bright colours an the history of a tough, vulnerable hippie-Asian resource-retireopolis that is of the rainy Pacific Northwest but also has something all its own, and whose story is just beginning.… (mehr)
