Marti MacGibbon, CADC-II, I-CADC, ACRPS, is an author, addiction treatment professional, motivational speaker, and veteran standup comic. She is a member of the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors (CAADAC), the Indiana Counselors Association on Alcohol and Drug Addiction (ICAADA), and the National Speakers Association. Marti developed her vibrant sense of humor and acquired her depth from living life at full volume.
What is remarkable about Marti MacGibbon is that she is so resilient. She has rebounded and healed herself from experiences that embody the nightmares of many people — international human trafficking, domestic violence, addiction, homelessness; and she not only survived, but has recovered and thrived.
Marti worked as a professional standup comic from 2000-2007. But she knew she wanted to give more to life than laughs. So she enrolled in education and training as an addiction treatment specialist. In 2007 she completed her internship at Twin Town Treatment Centers in Los Angeles. And she began working as an addictions counselor to homeless veterans at Swords to Plowshares, a non-profit organization established by homeless Viet Nam veterans in 1974. Marti continues to work at Swords to Plowshares on a volunteer basis. In August 2010, she earned the distinction of Advance Certified Relapse Prevention Specialist (ACRPS). This certification qualifies her to work as a consultant, assisting relapse prone patients at addiction treatment facilities.

Marti presently resides with her husband, Christopher, in Indianapolis and the San Francisco Bay area, alternately. She is blessed with an amazing daughter, Anne, and an awesome grandson, Drew

Fierce, Funny, and Female: A Journey Through Middle America, the Texas Oil Field, and Standup Comedy by Marti MacGibbon is a 2017 Stay Strong publication.

Marti MacGibbon has truly led a very challenging life!! However, she is also a bold inspiration, and living proof that if there is a will, there is a way.

This memoir follows Marti from her teenage years beginning in 1969 up to present day, where she is enjoying the realization of a lifelong dream.

Marti’s story is not an easy one to read about in many ways. I’ll be completely honest and say that most of this book is harrowing, and one should be prepared to read about some uncomfortable topics. Marti lays it all out there, with blunt honesty, with no holds barred. The story is a heavy one, which can take a toll on one’s emotions. I had to take a break from Marti’s reality from time to time for what I nicknamed ‘bleakness-breaks.”

However, if you want to see true feminism, follow Marti’s story. She has worked in male dominated fields her entire life and carved out a niche for herself despite the odds. Finding women out in the Texas Oil Fields was a very rare occurrence in the eighties, but Marti stuck with it, making me feel a little abashed complaining about the ‘good ole boy’ network I had to cope with, back before I retired. She stuck it out, in a rough environment, which, in the end, helped her build both a physical and mental toughness that prepared her for the next stage in her life.

Although she was victimized, suffered through addictions and mental health issues, and made some whopping errors in judgment, she also had guts, grit, and determination, and became a survivor. She is a true trailblazer and has come out on the other side of her tribulations to become a successful stand- up comedian, motivational speaker and author. Seriously, this lady has rubbed elbows with some very well-known comedians!! Not only that, she pays it forward by helping others who have battled the same demons she has.

There is only one hole in the book, which is centered around Marti’s daughter. The fight for custody was one of Marti’s main reasons for toughing it out in the oil fields, but we were never updated on how things turned out on that front.

Other than that, Marti’s voice is genuine and realistic, and the story flows with a steady pace. I was able to visualize Marti’s life and the various people she introduced me too, as well as the landscape she describes. The ‘oil field’ language can be colorful, so one should be prepared for that, in advance, but I’m glad she didn’t water anything down.

There is only one hole in the book, which is centered around Marti’s daughter. The fight for custody was one of Marti’s main reasons for toughing it out in the oil fields, but we were never updated on how things turned out on that front.

Although the positive aspects of Marti’s life took a while to surface, it makes her success seem that much sweeter.

One thing that strikes me is how far we’ve come in the time span covered in this book, with Marti paving paths in ways she never realized at the time. Sadly, her last comments in the author segment were written in a time when new and exciting prospects seemed possible. Although there was still much work to be done, we could look back with pride and see the great strides we’d taken over the past decades.
However, some of the major progress we’ve made in women’s rights and in civil rights are once more threatened. But, if there is anything I gleaned from Marti’s story, it is to keep fighting the good fight, to face challenges head on, and to never give up on your hopes and dreams!!

Central theme in this story. Not having an alcohol or drug problem I cannot relate, being female and knowing that the sex trade is something that happens daily is something I can relate with.

What did you think of the ending? I felt the ending wrapped everything up nicely. Knowing that Marti is now recovered and living a productive life thrilled this reader.

If you were to talk with the author, what would you want to know? I would like to know how/why she allowed someone to talk her into traveling to Japan. I understand she thought she was going to a job, but the out of the way airport, the weird meeting, everything just seemed off.

If you could rewrite the ending, would you? No, but I would have liked to know more about her life in rehab. The first few month or even years would be interesting reading.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author.

I got this book for free from Members Giveaway. This book was okay and definitely not one of my favorite memoirs. In a nutshell, the book takes the reader through Marti's young life when she moved to California, started using drugs and how she got through it. I was not too keen on the writing. There was too much bad language and I'm not the type that would normally complain, but literally it was too much in this book. The writing was very basic, more like she was having a conversation with the invisible reader.

Marti MacGibbon is a beautiful woman who loses herself to a life of drugs , she is trafficked to Tokyo , and made into a sex slave. She endures rape , beating , homelessness , and seperation from her daughter. She uses drugs to block out all her pain, after years of being an addict , she fights her fears and becomes the brilliant person that was hiding behind the drugs.

This is an excellent memoir, I was shocked by everything this one human being went through, but yet she finally saw the light and was strong enough to overcome all the darkness that had entered her life… (mehr)
