I found this an exceptionally interesting biography, and it really told me things I did not know, even though I was very conscious of Frances Perkins as Secretary of Labor for much of the time she was such. Her husband was Paul Wilson, but he was often unwell and played little role in her public life. She was active in "settlement work," a strong high-church Episcopalian, and had a rocky time from Martin Dies and others of his ilk in the late 1930's… (mehr)

A guide to 47 operas from the 18th and 19th centuries, this text provides a synopsis for each opera with an introduction singling out the particular strengths and flaws of the piece, its antecedents, innovations, and controversial intepretations of it. The text does not assume the ability to read music. Instead, it emphasizes key words that can be heard and understood in performance. The aim of this is to clue the reader into the action.
