Written and set in the early 1960s, a group of four sixth-graders, Pam Frost, Marcie Mason, and twins Fred and Larry Fuller, find a mysterious note hidden in the trunk of an old tree on the property of the Mason's newly built house. It inspires them to find out more about an old abandoned Victorian mansion with a bad reputation named the Hard Luck House for a school project.

This book was a quick read and had enough suspense and adventure to keep my interest. It definitely stays true to the time period in which it was written and contemporary children will probably find it naive and somewhat alien.
