A pretty good adventure but featuring the single toughest opponent of the whole series, I think. Your chances of survival are fairly slim, even if you get all of the macguffins. There are some other flaws here apart from difficulty - the book is more of a railroad than an open road, and there are some poorly edited sections that mean you can do a whole chunk of it a second time without skipping the exposition and whatnot. It was good fun to read through and would be fun to map properly. But your chances of victory are so slim as to be nonexistent and a book you can't complete without cheating isn't as fun as it could be.… (mehr)

This is a fairly workmanlike gamebook. Evil wizard threatens island, YOU! have to stop him. Part exploration, part dungeon crawl, there is nothing especially noteworthy or interesting about this story, but at the same time its not bad. Not Sargent's best work by a long way but certainly not a stinker. Oh, and Russ Nicholson is absolutely on fire in the illustrations. Some of his absolute best work can be found here. The sea giant, the sprite, the half-ogre, the spectre, worth buying for those alone, if that's your bag.… (mehr)
