The perfect book for the gardener! Well written and very readable, it's done in a style that will make you want to read the whole book. Full of beauty, advice, recommendations and experience, this is not the normal how-to gardening book. The book is broken down into seasons and each season is broken down into the senses: touch, taste, smell, sight and sound. This breakdown is brilliant and so unusual, however, very logical. Great for any gardener and wonderful for gift giving!

In The Garden in Every Sense and Season: A Year of Insights and Inspiration from My Garden, Tovah Martin chronicles four seasons in her garden, carefully describing what each of her five senses experiences each season. Martin has been creating her seven-acre garden in northeastern Connecticut since 1996, so there is plenty for her to see, smell, hear, touch, and taste.

She offers practical gardening advice, organized by season and senses, told in a lively and chummy style. The book is like spending a year in a garden with a good friend. You’ll have a few laughs, pick up some sound pointers, get fresh ideas, and maybe appreciate your own garden in a new way.… (mehr)

I read this Terrarium manuel in about five days due to wanting to create my first Terrarium. This book is a fine introduction to the spirit of designing, tending and caring for Terrariums. Stamped with ornate pictures of contemporary Terrariums, you'll find as an introduction and inspiration to beginning your own projects, it serves its purpose perfectly. It lists suitable plants to look out for, and provides ideas for housing your miniature worlds. It's a relaxed written overview of the whole Terrarium scene, admittedly it doesn't probe into more eccentric or historical aspects of creating these petite turfs but it certainly allows a plot of informatively written conversation about the subject that will surely send you on your merry way (Apart from Wardian Cases and Cloches of which she digs a little deeper into).

I enjoyed the language used by the author Tovah, especially when describing the various suitable plants, I found it specific enough to be able to possibly recognise some of the flora at my local nursery without having had to view a picture from the book, and her creative expression makes the whole process delectably inviting.

So from this book, I was inspired enough to visit my local Opportunity Shop, and select a few decadent cloches and tureen like items, pop up to my nursery and select a desirable summer bloom, and create a Terrarium which now sits for contemplative inspection whilst I do the washing up in the kitchen.

This was a book to savor. The author introduces us to her garden and her love for the differences each season brings. The book is divided into the four seasons and in each, the author describes her garden using the five senses. Included are beautiful photographs. The author tries to get the reader to stop putting order into gardening and instead, just walk and enjoy all the joys the outside can surprise you with. I loved this book and will turn to it often for inspiration. Its a book I want to have laying on my table all year long.
I received a complimentary book from Librarything Early Reviewers.
