3.5 rounded up. You can tell that this is a debut but it's a worthwhile read because of the perspective it provides about growing up in modern South Africa. The characters are relatively young but this didn't read like YA.

Multiple types of distressing subject matter presented in a riveting way. Difficult to keep reading, but impossible (for me, anyway) not to finish. The ending felt like a bit of a cop out. Three and a half stars.

Takes the form of a journal - begging, pleading, questioning, raging at, despairing of and yearning for some sign or comfort from God. The story that’s told through the journal is pretty heavy.
A really decent read.
