I did enjoy this readable novel. I found the plot catchy - I liked the family drama, the different stories and especially the twist in Ch 26. I found the range of characters interesting - espec Friar, Lilian and Micky. I liked their conflict. I also like novels that have references to letters and letter witing - and this novel does. I also like the NZ flavour - though it would still be very accessible for foreign readers. I would recommend it to people who like books that make them think.

This is set on Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand, 1938. For 3 months of the year the men of the island take up whaling with a passion. The men see it as a form of fishing, requiring immense skill and teamwork. We observe their lives through one of the wives, Lilian. Out of necessity they are a close knit community but when there is an accidental harpooning of Lilian's son Micky, the reader discovers that the community has held Lillian at a distance because of her past actions.… (mehr)
