Kobudo and Taira Shinken. Only way I could follow some of the illustrations was already knowing something of kobudo from my training last year [2000]. Frustrating to have author use Japanese terms for so many moves and stances, when I don't know what the terms mean.

In Ancient Okinawan Martial Arts: Koryu Uchinadi the Western reader has ready access, for the first time, to an extensive collection of the most important documnents written by and about Okinawa's most famous karate and kobudo masters and their arts, as well as to photographs of kobujutsu katas of historical significance. This two-volume anthology includes previously untranslated texts by Chojun Miyagi (founder of Goju Ryu karate), Kenwa Mabuni (founder of shito ryu karate), Shinken Taira (founder of ryukyu kobudo), Choshin Chibana (founder of kobayashi shorin ryu karate), and Choki Motobu (the notorious scrapper who in his maturity went on to teach many who became great masters in their own right). Patrick McCarthy-with the able assistance of his wife, Yuriko McCarthy-prvides expert translation and commentary based on his extensive research into these masters and the systems they founded, as well as into the establishment of the Okinawan karate tradition in the main islands of Japan.

Volume Two features Kenwa Mabuni, Chojun Miyagi, and the role of the seminal martial arts organizations in preserving and modernizing the ancient art for posterity. Included are:

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: The Mabuni Kenwa story by Patrick McCarthy

The Dai Nippon Butokukai by Partick McCarthy

Karatedo: Development, Essence, and Aims by Patrick McCarthy

Karatedo Gaisetsu: An Outline of Karatedo by Chujun Miyagi

1936 Meeting of Okinawan Karate Masters-a transcription of the historic meeting that determined the course of modern karatedo

Patrick McCarthy is, at 7th dan, kyoshi, one of the highest ranking Westerners in the Dai Nippon Butokukai, Japan's prestigious traditional martial arts organization. HIs writing has appeared in The Journal of Asian Martial Arts, Bugeishi, Inside Kung Fu, Black Belt, Karate International, Fighting Arts International, and Budo Dojo.
