Three experts on aviation and a photographer for National Geographic present a lavishly illustrated volume that traces the fourteen-thousand-mile flight of the Vimy in 1919 and its recreation seventy-five years later. The Vickers Vimy was a British heavy bomber aircraft developed in WW1 for the Royal Air Force. During the interwar period, the Vimy set several notable records for long-distance flights; perhaps the most celebrated and significant of these was the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, which was performed by John Alcock and Arthur Brown in June 1919.
Aviation history at its finest is profiled in McMillan's story of an early aviator's first trip halfway around the world. 75 years later American flyer Peter McMillan and his copilot relived the achievement in a replica of the wood/fabric original: National Geographic filmed the event and the trip's past and present are covered in this beautiful photo-embellished account. -- Midwest Book Review… (mehr)
