Do an Internet search and you will find plenty negative things written about this book which was written nearly fifty years ago. Many comments are personal attacks on the book's seventeen contributors. In my view, they pretty much confirm the "voices of concern" which led most of the contributors to leave the churches of Christ.

The main theme that runs throughout the book is that many of the preachers and other leaders in the sect known as churches of Christ preach a gospel of legalism and exclusivity that runs contrary to the gospel of Christ, which is a gospel of love and unity in Him. The contributors are (or were, as most are now deceased) "Insiders," that is, "members" of the churches of Christ. Most contributors stated that they did not wish to write negatively of the church of their youth, and continued to love many of its members.

Since the book is a couple of generations old, one would think that if it were written today, there would be less despair and more hope conveyed by the contributors. Yet, another Internet search, or a search on social media, will quickly lead one to learn of attitudes by some members of the churches of Christ that reflect strong sectarianism or "Church of Christism" as it is sometimes called. Yet there are many others who express a broader view of the church.

I've had the book in my library since 1967 and finally got around to reading it in its entirety. I'm glad I did. The articles are thoughtful, well-written, and worthy of consideration by persons interested in the Stone-Campbell religious heritage, regardless of the "stream" (Disciples, independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, and churches of Christ).

There is no index nor bibliography.
