Lady Eleanor is kept as a virtual slave by her brother Edward Tarrington who intends to stop at nothing to keep her fortune for himself. Eleanor is an unpaid governess to her nieces and nephews and often takes beatings to keep them safe. Alexander, Lord Bentley, needs a wife to take care of his children. Eleanor seems perfect, and when he believes he has taken advantage of her, his only course is to offer to marry her. She is puzzled, but accepts and they marry in secret, leaving before her brother finds out. Her new life makes Eleanor happy, but she soon discovers why Alexander thinks he had to marry her, and that her brother will stop at nothing to access her inheritance, putting them all in grave danger. A quick read.… (mehr)

WHAT I LIKED

I loved this book, it was a great work of literature. I didn't want to give to much away, wanted to leave you not knowing what happens. I loved the historical romance played out between Sarah and Captain Mayhew. They have such a love, hate relationship. Sarah has been on her own far too long. Longing for that physical connection with a man, but is afraid to let herself go. I loved how this romance was "romantic" and not trashy. The author gives you just enough to want a little more then leaves you. Which makes it a classic Jane Austen era play off. The tension between Sarah and Captain Mayhew leaves you on your toes. Throughout the book you never really can guess who is the good guy or bad guy. Up until the end I was on pins and needles. Loved the writing, brought me right back to the time period. Wonderfully thought out and written.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

What I didn't like about the book. How annoying Sarah's character was at times. She was so "wishy washy" for a lack of a better word. I almost wanted to slap her and say, wake up. She could also be really dumb at times. I understood that she was in panic but come on now, she wasn't as naive as she was playing to be!

RATING

Loved this book and give 5 stars out of 5. Bravo! Fenella J. Miller. I can't wait to read more of her books. If you are a Jane Austen fan, historical fiction or romance book reader you will love this book! WONDERFUL

Eliza Fox had been in charge of the estate ever since the death of her father five years before. She had become resigned to spending the rest of her life as a spinster when her fiancé died shortly after her father. Her brother would come of age in one year and take charge of the Grove House and farm work. Until then, Eliza often performed the work of a field hand making a living for her grandmother, mother, and mentally challenged teenaged sister Sarah.

Life suddenly changes upon the return of Eliza’s brother Edmund and the news of his loss of the estate and everything they own. Shortly on his heels appear Lord Wydale and his friend Fletcher Reed. Wydale had given Edmund three months but was now in a hurry to see the property. Fletcher went along to keep his friend in check. When Fletcher meets Eliza elegant in evening clothes, he recognizes the farmer who had thrown mud at the two men earlier. Fletcher falls for Eliza and vows to save her home.

Ms. Miller weaves a tale of romance, family, and adventure. The romance between Eliza and Fletcher is illustrated by an awakening of hidden desires. The lovers each place their lives on the line to save Sarah from the wicked clutches of Wydale. A true page-turner.
