Pages 1-142, 262-335, and 374-483 were assigned readings for WWII in Europe Case Study in S&W at the NWC. This served as my core text and primary reference material for my paper on Allied Strategy. This quote from the preface was central to helping me formulate my argument, "the greatest advantage the Allies enjoyed over the Axis was the capacity to make strategic decisions that balanced ends against means" (pg x).

From the syllabus: Murray and Millett’s narrative history of the Second World War focuses on the operational level of war. The selections assigned cover the entire war in Europe from its inception in September 1939 until the surrender of Germany in May 1945.… (mehr)

Desde que terminó la segunda guerra mundial se han publicado innumerables estudios sobre los más diversos aspectos del conflicto. Somewhat dated now since the essays were written in the early 1980s, this book remains a valuable high level view of the seven main powers in WWII.

I didn't expect such a deep and expansive tome on military history to be as engaging as it was. Some of the inter-war chapters got a bit dry at times—after awhile the political infighting starts to blend together. But the treatment of the wars was interesting and even engrossing.

Highly recommend.
