I owe the writer, publisher, and #NetGalley an apology for taking so long to read this advance copy. I enjoyed this book a great deal, and was glad to learn more about the history of and connections among the musicians and music I’ve listened to and loved my whole life.

The history covered is so wide and deep that I can forgive some of the confusion around timelines, repetition, and occasional errors (plus, I read an advance review copy, so I’m sure the typos were corrected). I did laugh, though, at the line about Ryan Adams quitting drugs cold turkey, with the help of Valium. That’s not really cold turkey, my friend.

The book is entirely narrative and descriptive; there is almost no analysis. I expected more because it’s from an academic press, but that seems to be my mistake. I still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this interdisciplinary genre of music.
