Death in Rocky Mountain National Park (Death in the… von Randi Minetor

There are a number of books covering the various ways to in National Parks; this one is part of a series, but others are stand-alone. (see Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon). Rocky Mountain National Park is the fourth most visited park in the system (after Great Smokey Mountains, Grand Canyon, and Zion) but has way more than its share of rescue and recovery operations, as befits high altitude and rapidly changing weather. Not surprisingly, the single largest category is falls – there are places in the park where you can free fall 1000 feet. Most of these happen to people who undertake climbs way beyond their abilities and without proper equipment – but sometimes even experienced climbers just have bad luck (see Longs Peak for the most popular climb, but note that it’s perfectly easy to die on a lesser-known mountain). I was surprised by the number of drowning incidents; the rivers in the park are all small. But in the spring and early summer they are full of rapidly moving glacially cold water, and a slip on the shore or a misguided attempt to wade or jump across can lead to being found pinned underwater some ways downstream. Lightning has taken people who just took a few steps away from their car to look at the scenery. Although a lot of city people fear wildlife, there’s only been one documented case of a fatal attack in the park – a mountain lion versus a 10 year old, in sight of his parents. Author Randi Minetour omits traffic accidents, medical conditions, and suicides from her stories, but all the fatalities and their cause are listed in an appendix and I was surprised by the number of people who decided RMNP was the right place to end their lives. There are also a number of people who just disappeared in the park and have never been found.

There’s a chapter on how to avoid dying in the park, with all the obvious things – tell people where you’re going, don’t try to climb Long’s Peak in shorts and a T-shirt, if you don’t think you can jump across that stream don’t try it – but it all boils down to don’t do dumb stuff.… (mehr)

Death in Zion National Park: Stories of Accidents… von Randi Minetor

This was a different read, it goes through the people who died in the park, mostly through accident though there are a few suicides mentioned. Luckily, statistically, there are very few deaths compared to the number of people who go through Zion each year. The basic concept is if you follow the signs, stay within the allowed areas and know what you're doing if you're climbing or rappelling then you should be fine though of course accidents can happen.
