Apparently I don't identify strongly enough with the gay movement; much of the collection left me lukewarm.

The Penguin Book of International Gay Writing von Mark Mitchell
Mitchell assembles 46 pieces of fiction and nonfiction in translation by 41 writers from Europe, Asia and Latin America. As before, the authors-famous and little-known, contemporary and ancient-are not necessarily gay, but do depict a broad range of homosexual experience. Many of the names are expected and welcome: Gide, Mishima, Cocteau, Puig. Wisely, Mann's 'Death in Venice' is reprinted in its entirety (in a fine new translation by David Luke).

The New Penguin Book of Gay Short Stories von David Leavitt
The Scott-Moncrieff story was weird, if I'd seen it elsewhere I would have had no idea what it was supposed to be about. I didn't think there was anything particularly gay about the E. M. Forster story apart from the fact that it was written by a gay man.

So far I think the most enjoyable story has been the Noel Coward one. A bit of a cliche in some ways, I suppose, but I really enjoyed the narrator.

Otherwise, not too impressed. Too many AIDS stories. Brokeback Mountain brought good memories of the film.… (mehr)

The is a collection of short stories and novel excerpts that not only provided a look at non-mainstream literature, but can serve as a guide to reading between the lines (yes, they did just imply what you think they implied).
