Slavery and Frontier Conquered with God...

The beauty of this book is the ability of the authors to make the reader identify with the heroines. I felt like I was hurting with Mandy in "The Long Road Home" as she realizes her husband has deserted her, just as she discovers their much wanted child is coming. I could feel and smell the fear of Deidre, the runaway slave,caught at the barn.

I loved the next book, "On the Wings of Grace," because it takes up with some of the undesirable characters of book one, and yet shows how some Christians truly loved these "soiled doves" into Heaven's arms and showed them their true worth in God's eyes.

Book three, "Where Two Agree," doubles back and tells more of the story of Diedre's lost husband, who is somewhere on a plantation in the deep South. Jeremiah has endured some horrible times, but finally God begins to move His chess pieces in the game of life to effect a wonderful ending for this little family.

Book four was rather unconnected, but was a pioneer woman, with the same indomitable spirit. Ms. Mitchum's character, "Rika," is upset at having to leave Germany for the wasteland of America and to lose her great musical school future as well. First she pouts at every opportunity, then she is forced to grow up and see her sister and mother through horrors unimaginable to us today. Will she survive and come out better or will she wilt and become bitter? Who will she choose to stand beside her in this new wilderness?

All of these stories give glory to God for directing the future, even when it is bleak and unyielding. Characters learn to trust God and His wisdom rather than lean on their own understandings. It is clear, that one can, with God's help, decide how one will view life and what life deals to him/her. If you like books of the frontier/and or slavery issues, this could be the book for you!… (mehr)
