I wish my Spanish was better, because the poems in this volume that are in English are really good, but my Spanish vocabulary is only good enough to get the general gist of his Spanish poems, without a true sense of the nuances in what he is saying. Taken as a whole, this volume goes well with Gloria Anzuldua's [b:Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza|45882|Borderlands/La Frontera The New Mestiza|Gloria E. Anzaldúa|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1354902833s/45882.jpg|45046] as literature addressing the complexities of race, class, history and gender in the Southwest US and Mexico. Mora was incarcerated in Colorado, and his poetry reflects his specific location, but he also addresses his identity and situation in broader terms, and his code-switching between languages was interesting, especially where both English and Spanish blend together in the same lines of the same poem.… (mehr)
