Jack & Laura are back in a new adventure!

In this book, Jack and Laura travel to Hanover, Pennsylvania, because Jack needs somewhere where he can start a new Blackie Doyle book. His agent Mildred has strictly told him that he must write a really good book or less his contract won't be renewed. But Jack also has another reason for choosing Hanover as the town to stay as he writes his first chapters. Jack's last case for Pinkerton was in Hanover. And, the last case is a case that he has never forgotten because it was never solved. A young woman was killed and her killer was never caught. Could Jack after ten years finally find the killer?

It was great to return to the 30s and once again read another Jack & Laura mystery. For one thing, I love movies from this period and the fact that Laura is an actress that's working with some of the biggest names of the time is marvelous. And, that she seems to have a past history with William Powell is interesting. Now she is slated to star against Clark Gable, unfortunately, he was never in this book. But perhaps in the next book...

The mystery of a murdered teenager girl is tragic, especially since the killer has never been caught. And, now the time is running out for the girl's mother who is dying. But taking on this case is not easy for Jack, most of the townspeople want him to quit trying to find the killer and open up old wounds and he has a very important book to write. But he is not the one to give up.

This is the kind of charming adventure book I love to read. I do wish that it had been more Hollywood stars in this book. I love cameos from known actors. And, the one I'm most looking to see beside William Power is Humphrey Bogart. I know, Laura is going to star alongside Clark Gable, and that will be interesting. But. Bogart in this series, well wouldn't it be perfect when you think about what kind of movies he starred in?

One thing I really enjoyed was getting to know Mildred, Jack's agent, better. She has always been a tough dame, but learning more about her and her life really made me like her very much. This was a good book, I liked the case more than the last book, probably because it was more personal for Jack and also because it was not easy to figure out who the killer was.

3.5 stars

Laura Wilson, Broadway star arrives in Hollywood to star in a screwball comedy. With her is her boyfriend Jake Donovan, who is under pressure to write his next mystery novel. But they hardly have time to settle down before everything goes wrong. A man is killed at a party they attend the very same night they arrive in LosAngeles and Jake is soon murder suspect number 1...

Everyone that has seen screwball comedies from the 1930s will feel familiarity with this book. It feels like an homage to old Tinseltown and screwball comedies. There are even cameo appearances by William Powell and Carol Lombard in the story. I really loved that since I'm a huge fan of 1930s movies and love screwball movies. If you haven't seen The Thin Man, then you should see it after you read this book.

This book is fast-paced and funny and there are both mobsters and movie stars, and of course murder. Never a dull moment! Jake must do everything in his power (together with Laura of course) to exonerate himself and that before the press prints that he is the prime suspect and his career is over and also clear himself so he doesn't end up in jail for a murder he didn't commit...

This was the first book I read with Jake and Laura, but it won't be the last (especially since I own the first book). I enjoyed reading this book very much and it felt very good to read something lighthearted once in a while. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, perhaps a female aviator will be in it...?

Mystery novelist Jake Donovan and actress Laura Wilson are back in Wings in the Dark, the third book in the Jake & Laura mystery series. The newly wed couple are are in Hawaii on a honeymoon when they get pulled in to investigate a murder at a hanger. Hank Kalua, a businessman has been shot and the police are suspecting Amelia Earhart and now they must find proof that she is innocent.

After reading All that Glitters, the second book in this series was I really looking forward to reading the sequel and I was especially happy that Amelia Earhart that showed up in the end of All that Glitters was part of this book. Jake and Laura are a wonderful couple and they have finally tied the knot and are on a honeymoon with no planes whatsoever to get involved in a murder that is until a man dies close to Amelia Earhart plane and she was the only on there. Still Jake has promised Laura, no more dangerous cases, but Amelia husband will not take no for an answer and pressure Jake's agent to make Jake take the case. So now Jake and Laura must put their honeymoon on hold to find out who really shot Hank Kalua. Why did the man get shot, is someone trying to frame Amelia and is there a spy in Hawaii?

It was nice to read a new Jake and Laura book, but I found the case in this book less interesting and much easier to crack than the previous book. I knew from the beginning who the spy was and that in many ways ruined the books story for me. It is one thing to suspect a character in a book, it's another to be quite sure of the identity of the one everyone is looking for. For one thing, there wasn't that many people in the book to suspect, not enough red herrings and that made the identification of the spy easy to figure out.

But, I was a bit surprised in the end when Jake figured out something in the case that I hadn't though of. Also, even though the case was not the strongest part of the book is it always nice to read about a time I'm really fond of. And, the cameos of Shirley Temple and General George Patton was a nice touch. Also, the appearance of another famous person towards the end was quite interesting. Makes me wonder what the next book will be about.

So in my humble opinion, not as good and charming as All that Glitters, but a decent read. I still have the first book unread and I'm looking forward to reading that one.

I received this copy from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review! Thank you!
