- Her name was a pseudonym and her true identity is unknown. Although she was a bestselling author with her multi-volume first novel, Cicely; or the Rose of Raby: An Historical Novel (1795), Agnes Musgrave's life is a cipher. She was probably born late in the 18th century. She went on to publish another two books with the Minerva Press: Edmund of the Forest, An Historical Novel (1797) and The Solemn Injunction (1798). In 1801, she published The Confession, and her final novel, William de Montfort; or the Sicilian Heiresses appeared in 1808. It's possible that she belonged to the gentry class of society, as in the introduction to Cicely she talks of connections between her family and the nobility.
