Alice Nahon (1896–1933)

Alice Nahon was born into a large family of French-Dutch background in Antwerp. In 1911, she graduated from the School for Agriculture in Overijse. At the outbreak of World War I, Alice trained as a student nurse amd worked at the front, but she contracted lung disease; though she tried to continue her education and to work, she had to spend years in various sanitaria in different countries. Her first poems were published while she was in the Sint-Jozefsinstituut in Tessenderlo, Belgium. Alice Nahon's work resonated with the public and she remains one of the most popular of Flemish female poets. Alice Nahon died at 36 years of age.
